Fear of God's Will

My friend Miriam is an excellent seamstress. One Spring she was busy working on a soft blue one piece outfit for her newest grandson. His big brother was close by and asked "MeMe, what are you doing?"

"I'm making an Easter outfit for your new baby brother."

Recognizing the very real and normal possibility that he might be jealous of this new little person in his life, she went on to reassure him that she would also be making him an Easter outfit. With long legs, a horrified look, and a bit of a quiver in his voice he said "like that?!"

We all laughed as she retold that story but it came back to my mind this week after having some intentional conversation around the table. I was one of six ladies, all different ages, all different stages in life. We all agreed that as believers we want desperately to be in God's will. For the most part our struggle is not choosing between good and bad. We for sure recognize that choice.

But what about wanting desperately to live in God's will, while having desires - good desires - that we are not sure are part of His story for our life? We know we can trust Him. We know His will is what's best for us. But tucked back in the corner of our heart sometimes there is a little fear. What if He wants us to wear a blue baby bubble?

Miriam loves that big brother and had the perfect outfit in mind for Him. So much more does Father God love us, know us and have perfect plans for us. As I realize how much I have in common with that little fellow, fear is replaced by laughter that leads to peace. How silly I am to ever have feared Him!

Some of you are fathers, so ask yourselves this: if your son comes up to you and asks for a fish for dinner, will you give him a snake instead? If your boy wants an egg to eat, will you give him a scorpion? Look, all of you are flawed in so many ways, yet in spite of all your faults, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to all who ask!
